Well, I have managed to finish the stage. (You need about 620 points before the next powerup falls)
And I used a simple y position check to determine whether Mario goes up or down. (If you're lower on the screen, you go up. However, if you're high enough, you go down.)
Maybe I'll change that system later, but for now it'll stay that way.
