I'd suggest reading some sprite tutorials...

Some main problems, are that the lineart is really blocky. Try to make it looks smoother. He has a really, really akward stance too.

He has no shading at all. It looks like you made him really fast.


I'd work on him a bit more.


And no, they aren't in the same style.

Its supposed to be blocky. its based on the original SMB sprites. Also, how do i shade something with a black outline?

Well, not to be rude or anything, but he meant it when he said they were not in the same style.
If you want it to be like the sprite you showed, get some NES color Palettes, Try making it the same size as Mario ( Or really any NES game. Typical size is 32x32 OR 64x32. Maybe 32x64? )
Plus, by blocky, I think he means the edges are sharp.

I think I can redo the shading, but im doing this stuff in ML style. It has SMB sprites in ML style

Have a look at some of the sprites on this site, to give you an idea of the sort of things to do. Picking up techniques off others is a good way to get better.

Again, look at some M&L sprites, these don't look too in style.

M&L style doesn't mean just outlining it and adding gray AA on the outside.

Sounds like a reasonably good game. And maybe you could learn how to sprite M&L:SS style using one of these tutorials.

3D?

It does need to look real and have a bit of shading, but this doesn't look 3D to me.

M&L sprites look about this 3D.

EDIT: But I'm not asking you to use this, I'm asking you to look at it and get ideas.
