I FINALLY CAN DO THIS!, yes yes yes!

I finally figured out how make Mario move in my game.

What do i set the variables to for jumping if I only want him to move forward 1 square and up 1 square and then go down?

block size / 2

edit: actually what you probably want is the inverse of
s = x(x+1)/2
where s is block size, solve for x

I probably should have mentioned Im using Game Maker 7 Lite.

that doesn't give me any magical insight as to how your engine works

I'm creating the engine myself, and I have the moving right ready, but I need to figure out how to jump. How do i make mario jump directly 1 square up and to the right and then fall when you press Space?

how do you implement the moving? specifically when there's no input, what happens to mario's position and velocities.

this is exactly my code:

Keyboard event for <right> key
If Position is Collison Free
Start Block
start moving in directions 000001000 with speed set to 2
set the sprite to Mario1 with subimage -4 and speed 0.3
End Block

and here's my idea for my new engine style in case you think its worth anything.

You hold the Right key until a certain point and then release it to let Mario sliiiide. You get points for every coin and Princess you slide through but if you fly off the edge because you held the key too long then you lose.

I call it Mario's Chicken.

wow i didn't even realize this fit with the competition...well then yes it shall be for the competition and it's called Mario's Chicken. It's based off that one Wario minigame where you have to drive the car but not off the edge.

Wouldn't that just no collide him on the platform hes standing on? try applying the Megatronicition on the main player mario. dont put too much though. his hat can come off and crash the game!
