I believe that the game was nothing more but a stage act

The curtain moves up/down at the title screen and ending, the block platforms are bolted to the background, the moving wood platforms are controlled via lines, some platforms are hanging from the ceiling, there are shadows created by backdrop tiles, the background goes dark at the end of each level...

tl;dr: Mario was the actor, the levels were theater backdrops, and we were the audience

I've always thought of this...
Also, "course cleared" after each level.
Which means this game could have just been a test for Mario.

I'd love to see a paper mario game with smb3 wood floors and backdrops at the fighting sequences on stage.

It doesn't seem like there was really any joke here, but okay, I'll just go with that.

I never gave it much thought,

but you're right.

Its all props,
Wonder why I never thought of that?

-----update-----
Come to think of it
Mario 64 was done with toys.
note the Lego blocks in bowsers levels.
the oversized insects,
the level were you swim through an aquarium,
the marbles that flatten you in bob-omb battlefield..
the inside of a clock....

....I always thought it all seemed.....small.....

--------update 2---------

No....not toys....

Haha

I meant in reference to your theory of everything being a miniature.

Don't forget that Super Mario Bros. 2 was all just a dream.

Plus didn't Mario, Peach, and Bowser wake up at the end of Super Mario Galaxy?

IS THE ENTIRE LIFE OF MARIO JUST A LIE ALL THIS TIME???
