SMB2 was a dream. the bad guy remained wart. smb2 jap was an expansion on SMB1. perhaps it falls in the true storyline. ..what little of one there is to be salvaged.... they can all be explained by his subconscious

shyguys and snifits (as well as bob-ombs) appeared when he was young

during the dream, they returned from his memories; they actually existed all along

Birdos and Pokeys could be misrepresentations of Yoshis and Spiked Fun Guys that happened to be real as well

American McGee's version, were it was Alice's paranoid delusions. or the origonal, were she had died.
