does the bomb mask ever really get a use other than a poor substitute for bombs

So glad they put it on VC. The Gamecube port was way too buggy.

what are you talking about, it's a great substitute
if you use your shield you don't take any damage

I just use it to save bombs, also you need all masks to get the Fierce Deity Mask.

It's useful for blowin' up rocks and ****, so you can save your bombs.

It comes in handy plenty, especially when you use the shield trick to prevent health loss. One example I can think of is when you're fighting a ton of Keese - from what I can remember you do that twice: once in a grave and once again during the Gomess fight.

I wouldn't call it a "poor substitute", either, because it is a lot more convenient to use when you want to blow down a wall, a snowball, etc.

It's also great for glitching through the Snowhead Temple!

It's been a while since I've done it, but there's this ledge in the Snowhead Temple you can't ramp off using the Goron Mask. Below it to the right is another ledge with a roof over it. It's filled with snowballs, making it essentially inaccessible. It is at this point that one should raise the central pillar and punch out the blue sections so as to make a platform to walk to the latter ledge.

As a kid I never picked up on this, so I just assumed the game creators wanted me to drop a bomb at the exact right moment to blow up the first snowball and then proceed to jump off the higher ledge and blow myself onto the lower ledge via bomb mask. I've made it without the mask before, but it helped.
