Doesn't matter what people say there'll always be someone arguing for the other side.

I suck at fake advertising.

Play Mario Bros. and you will be an expert plumber.

Metroid if you want to be an exterminator.

COD4 if you want to join the army.

Rock Band if you want to be a rocker. (This game inspired me to buy a drum set.)

List keeps on going.

playing games like The Sims 2 might improve social interactions and even make people more empathetic

Unfortunately this is impossible. Most other claims make sense but at this point it seems like they're trying to allure gamers into a huger conundrum of arguments and debates.

Sims 2 != real life. There's just waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many variables impossible to mimic in a computer program.

Well stuff like this has been known for ages. Gamers have better problem solving skills generally, as well as being able to notice things better/find things.

And of course they train us to be cold blooded killers.

I don't see Sims 2 improving my empathy and social skills much if quite a bit of playtime is spent trying to shut people in inescapable rooms and set fires.

So right

That why we have Second Life too

Anyways, almost every gamer already knows that video games are a good thing. It just took the rest of the world a few years more to realize it.

As far as the whole gaming is good for you thing, it can help in the following ways:

ITG* / DDR* / PIU*: Keeps you fit and visually focused, and gives you half-way decent leg power
Tetris Attack / PPL* / Panel De Pon: Good for visual reflexes and reactions
Punch-Out!! Wii & GGCW*: Provides good Cardio Boxing activity
Wii Sports & Wii Fit: Eh, just keeps you moving physically if anything
Puyo Pop / Kirby's Avalanche: Actually makes you do some thinking as to how to set up chain patterns, in other words, a thinking game (sort of, not actually true)

Other than that, gaming is gaming and is a great time killer. Many games have their quirks and in most cases, enhances thinking and awareness. May also possibly prevent kids and teens from becoming pathetic urban degenerates.**

*Acronyms:
ITG: In The Groove, DDR: Dance Dance Revolution, PIU: Pump It Up, PPL: Planet (Or Pokemon) Puzzle League, GGCW: Gold's Gym Cardio Workout
**May only apply to random individuals, NOT everyone in general =p

Next people will be saying that Guitar Hero actually improves upon actual guitar skills.

Yeah, that's one of those things I hear and cringe myself to embarassment immediately. I play GH fairly regularly nowadays, and I can fairly say that my fingers have been a lot more limber (on my left hand anyway), but finger dexterity =/= Guitar Skills, as pointed out.

And hey, if it doesn't do anything for ya, at least you've got some somewhat alright music to listen to.
