What's the point.

They're giving you the password anyway, all it is is extra trouble.

I have no clue but it always annoys me. Especially when they set their username as the password or something in an attempt to "advertise" themselves.

Possibly they think it'll prevent the upload site's moderators from seeing the SECRET CONTENT of the file?

But they give you the password on the page usually.

Talking about Blogspot btw.

That's because it will.

A sufficiently long password made of 'random' alphanumeric characters will take weeks to brute force. I don't think the upload sites even bother trying to crack passworded RARs.

They GIVE YOU THE PASSWORD.

Oh, nvm.

I guess you meant the site like Mediafire that doesn't know the blogspot page >_>

Sorry I snapped at you.

Right, how do the upload sites know where to look to find the password?

The real reason I hate pass-locks is when the provider ****s up the password and either doesn't give you it, or gives you the wrong one, or ****s up the password so that a certain file can't be extracted.

without any mention of a password in the description or comments

Because most people want you to read the web page, or even post something when you download stuff, and wouldn't want someone to just download it, and re-upload it somewhere else.

So, they put a password on it, so you take 3 seconds of your time to copy that password, and during that maybe look at the rest of the page.
