Hey kiddos. I'm totally rusty at these review things, so don't expect much out of it, but I figured once a year is enough.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is the only Potter book I never read. I know I said that for the last movie, but that book I made it almost halfway before putting down. My copy of Half Blood Prince is sitting on my bookshelf in mint condition, waiting to someday finally be opened. I still don't have any intention of doing that soon.
The latest Harry Potter adventure sends Harry on his darkest mission yet. Gone are the mean relatives, gone are the bright colorful scenes, gone are the wizard candies. The series is in it's prime of it's material growth, and this movie translates better then any of them so far. Harry comes to his final year at Hogwarts, only to meet dark magic coming from within the walls, dying to be let out.
Director David Yates has really taken the series into the dark, mature realm seamlessly. The character are so well written in their growth, that one can only be surprised by how well the actors portray this on screen. Every movie has had a different actor stand out, and this time Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) really gets to shine. It's a very welcome change of pace after his near absence in the last two or three movies. Of course the main trio are amazing as usual, especially when playing off each other.
The script this time along is also a welcome treat. The movie has been accused of following the same Potter formula as usual, but to be honest I would argue against that. The movie spends most of it's time building up to a final stand, which never comes in the movie. The action scene is gone at the end really, only with one major event staying put. This works fine for me, but to warn those watching, it's a lot slower then usual. But that's okay, cause more character development is shown then ever before. Ron finally gets to play Quidditch. (Albeit, unexplained) And the ever present theme of love is all over the place, leading the movie to be easily the most cleverly funny.
The special effects were also a sight to be seen, again as usual. This time so many flashbacks and new wand spells are used that the special effects really shine more then usual. Maybe it's the extra six months the team had to work on it, but it's especially noticeable during Quidditch, how much CGI has improved since the start of the series.
The movie is a real treat, as expected. What wasn't expected was one of the better entries in the franchise. Director David Yates is settling into his new seat at the helm of the films, and boy is it a good thing. The movie changes the "Potter pace" and breaks the formula found in the last five films, to a cheer from me. I would've cared for a bit more action at the end, but it's really an empty claim as I still had a fantastic time. Here's to one (wait, two) more.

Went to the midnight, and I have to say it was the best midnight I'd been to in awhile, probably since Pirates.

Much better then Bruno.

What? Nononono, you don't go to Borat or Bruno for story. But even then, I didn't expect a movie that confused "homophobic fighting" humor for flat out disgusting humor.

Oh ok that too.

Don't get me wrong here. Bruno is a funny movie, and I enjoyed about 90% of it to death. But the movie resorted to such low-brow humor in two cases to which I really have to say I was disappointed by.

Mild spoilers of the first ten minutes;
Spoilers:
Bruno engages in a gay sex scene with another man, in "humorous" situations. The movie used the argument that it was battling homophobia, but I wouldn't want to see any of that stuff with a man and a woman anyway.

When it gets down to it Bruno was funny, but it was unenjoyable, if you know what I mean. I still love SBC's work, but it was just a little to much for me.

Anyway back to Harry Potter.

Amazingly it's a lot easier to write more when you're not writing one every weekend.

Crap, sorry about the double post. I don't know why I thought someone else posted.

Did you think Bruno was better or worse than Ali G Indahouse?

I haven't seen Ali G Indahouse, but I did enjoy Borat better. I've heard Ali G was a terrible movie when compared to the series.

It just didn't follow the same formula he used for his show/Bruno and Borat.

It was actually story based with character development.

But Borat was loads better.

I also liked his character in Taladega Nights. laugh3.gif

Just watched this.

And if you haven't read the book, there's a few things you won't get, since they missed them out.

e.g. Why it's called "The Half-Blood Prince"

Snape's mother's surname pre-marriage was 'Prince', so Snape is technically a half-blood Prince

Since I suffer from "I read the damn books" syndrome I did not like the movie too much. For a harry potter movie it was good, but it disappointed me in comparison to the book, but this has always happened EXCEPT with Jaws and The Lost World (Jurassic Park II)

No, I don't intend on ever bringing them back full time. Which is a shame since I still see a ton of movies. Hangover, Watchmen and HP6 are probably my three movies of the year so far.
