Yeah, but you didn't tell them. (the rules of said comp)
Now there are no limits. Try (atleast) to recolor something. To make it fit better.
Example: You castle background is very grey red and the castle tiles are very grey blue. (low sat, but there's sat) These won't fit and look horrible. Open both with photoshop and adjust the hue to make them the same, or decrease the sat to 0 on both. Another problem would be the shading style. NSMB ultra-3d tiles plus SNES castle background, cartoony, dithered = won't fit. Try to make everything fit, or this won't be a game, just a fluently animated game idea that looks a bit like an actual game, plus cool effects.
Forget it, some people (who don't care about graphics) will always vote for you.
