calling mfgg "4chan lite"

is like calling youtube "Something Awful lite"

just because mfgg has troll ratings and reactions images does not make it 4chan
just because youtube has Let's Play! does not make it Something Awful

stop hiding behind your "4chan lite" excuses

Troll ratings and reaction images didn't come from 4chan specifically. Most things people say on this board come from 4chan are actually just internet memes in general. 4chan is also not a bad place. Inb4 hurr durr /b/ is 4chan durp durp

I agree with the guy that said it's a lot of effort while ignoring the cause of the problem.

"Well what is the cause of the problem?" Kritter will probably ask.

You're the admins/mods, you find out. Or don't. Just keep banning people, because it's what you do best.

About Sprite: To be fair, he did call the mods idiots. That's flaming.

Toodles:

Lots of things serve a purpose that they were not originally created for. Cocaine was used as an analgesic. WD-40 is a water repellent, not a lubricant. Brass horns were originally used by hunters to signal their presence to others.

Similarly, the MFGG message board has evolved from just a sister site to the main MFGG website to an active community. I have little interest in fangames, so why do I come here? I come here for the people, and I'm sure many others would say the same thing. It's pretty funny that the fangaming part of the messageboard is the minority.

I think at this point the best thing to do would be to ignore the people who are trying to cause problems, listen to the people who are actually trying to make the community better, and move on with our lives. it's really silly that this is suddenly a big issue, when it really shouldn't be.

maybe I'm beating a dead horse here, but it's really annoying when one person starts completely disagreeing with something the moderation team does (puts stuff in his signature, makes insulting posts, etc.) and other people jump into the bait and start freaking out. I know I've done this before actually, so that may have sounded a tad bit hypocritical, but the point still remains that the community is a less enjoyable place when the people around you are fighting and bickering all the time.

I don't really know what I'm trying to accomplish with this post. I guess I'm just a bit annoyed and slightly angered by the way you guys have been acting lately. (including my own attitude too. it hasn't been that great either, unfortunately.)

QUOTE (Toodles @ Jul 28 2009, 06:49 PM)
Oh my gosh! Toodles is taking part in a debate! Call the newspapers!

Yeah, with that out of the way, I'd just like to point out something that seems to have been forgotten in the recent months on here. We are posting on the Mario Fan Games Galaxy forums. Let me put that in bold for emphasis: We are posting on the Mario Fan Games Galaxy forums. Okay, got that? Good. It's important.

You see, (that's the collective you, by the way) it would seem that the majority of the members on here seem to have forgotten the reason this forum exists! As an extension to the main site, these forums are meant to serve as a place where folks who have a common interest in Mario and fangame production and other such things can come to share ideas, resources, games, and even engage in some friendly conversation with one another.

At least, that was the point of the forum when I joined. And as far as I know, that was point of the forum when it was created, too.

Over time, though, it would seem that more and more members are joining MFGG who have no interest in Mario fangames, or even Mairo in general. Now before the posts come rolling in about discrimination or whatever, I'd like to ask a question. If you don't have any interest in Mario games or making fangames or doing anything even remotely related to the original purpose of this community, then why the heck did you even join in the first place? Surely there are other forums and communities and such out there on the internet that could better serve your needs. Am I wrong? This is the same point I made back in the Artistic Nudity discussion. MFGG is not the place for such things.

I'm not quite sure where this notion came from that MFGG has to cater to every single kind of member and every single kind of discussion and everything else under the sun. But one thing I have noticed is that it is spoiling the community. I'm not going to point fingers here because I think both staff and regular members are to blame for this. There's one thing that a lot of members don't seem to realize. MFGG is not very important. It's not a country. it's not the UN. It's not a special organization that has to make sure that every single person can be totally happy doing whatever they want. It's simply a place for those with similar interests about Mario and game making and the like to show their work and communicate. That's why I come here, and so far I have had absolutely no problems abiding by the forum rules and getting along with the other members. Fact is, very few people would care if MFGG ceased to exist tomorrow. Doesn't that make it seem just a tad pointless to nitpick everything and criticize other members for being terrible people all the time? I just don't see the point.

With the troll rating thing, I can see where the staff is coming from, especially with the clarification of this topic. Are troll ratings even remotely related to making a fangame, or discussing an article, or showing off some artwork? No! Of course not! They have nothing to do with that. Regular ratings, such as giving a fangame an 8/10 in a review or something do, and those are aloud! Makes sense to me! That's where the rules should come from, and that's what the focus of the members should be. If something has nothing to do with Mario,, game making, artwork, and the various other focuses of the forums on this board, it has no purpose being here. And that includes members, too. And it definitely isn't a concept that requires constant nitpicking and blaming of others to figure out.

Yes, the staff is going to make mistakes. Yes, there will be members with valid opinions that aren't particularly popular. And yes, there will always be members who will complain even when the staff doesn't do something wrong. I guess my point is, basically, to just chill out! One little issue on MFGG is not the end of the world. Now please direct you're attention to this page, pick out something that looks fun and take a chill pill. It's good for you.

And please don't pull this post to shreds and point out every little flaw in my logic. If you understand the point of this post, just leave it alone. I hate debates.

Posting this again because I'm afraid no one's gonna see it if I don't since it got stuck at the end of the last page. wink.gif

I'm sorry guys but despite the fact that you have your own opinions and have your own reasons to complain about such and such, blaming Spritanium's ban on "having an opinion" is redonkulous. Absolutely redonkulous. Members shouldn't flame the moderators of this forum any more than they should flame each other. If anything, you should avoid flaming moderators at all costs. It's common sense. But moderators are people too and shouldn't have to deal with being referred to as "idiots" because Spritanium wasn't happy with a decision of theirs!

It would be different if he would have left it at "incompetent", though still a slight bit insulting, it is in reference to their position as mods. "Idiots" is going too far to ignore.

QUOTE (Toodles @ Jul 28 2009, 05:49 PM)
[a large quantity of very meaningful text]

I love this post. Seriously.

I agree so much, it's incredible. I think this has inspired me to concentrate MUCH more than I've been doing recently on the FGD, Arts Board, and main site.

I might try to make a carefully worded and tactful post later on to try to calm things down in here, but idk, maybe not. As Toodles said, fueling overdiscussion of forum politics is not really something to be desired on a board about Mario fangames.

So many people have different opinions and thoughts.
I just don't even want to reply to all of them and state mine.
I would just like to say that no matter how hard you will try to make this place better. There will always be a bad side to it.
No one can make a perfect place and people shouldn't put there full concentration to try and make it closely like a perfect place unless they want to waste there life into trying it.

The MFGG mod is pushing the users too fast; so much that we're toppling over. You guys have two options, really. Do what you (note that there are less mods/ads than users (I know it's obvious, but it gets overlooked a lot)) want - which is what a lot of people people don't want -, or roll back three or four months to the way things were, and what the users want. What is the best way? I don't know, but you're doing the former option oh so wrong. This is obvious by the amount of 'rebelling' you've got. Like I said, you're evolving faster than the users are. Standardise with us, or of course you're going to piss people off. Take things a little slower, instead of going at hyperspeed to this 'promised land' you're talking about.

A possible suggestion might be: "Hey guys here is this new rule, we will start suspending you if you break it next week and after. Use the time until then to familiarize yourself with it and adjust."

Yeah, I guess that would work too.

Or maybe propose a rule, and see how MFGG takes it. Then if the users like it, enforce it. If people don't like it, listen to them, take it into account and then decide whether to use it or not.

I'd just like to say that banning people for something as inconsequental as a fraction or a picture (which can be worth a thousand words!) is awfully petty, and these "clarifications" only show that it's entirely subjective. this is not the kind of ruling that helps anything.

also, will general members ever get to see the mods' "top-secret" discussions, or was that a lie? just curious.
