Spending all this time and effort on 5/10 and hurrdurr.jpeg.

Uh yeaaaah... I don't know, loooks like you're getting rid of the symptoms rather than the cause.

It is very nice to clarify this, though you might've saved many members from bans earlier if you had clarified earlier. Maybe they wouldn't have raged so much and deliberately posted troll ratings to spite you, then.

They're not as invasive, but I seem to recall that it was never recommended to post just emoticons either.

Yeah it's a lot of effort to type out this stuff but unfortunately it's necessary to get everyone on the same page, and 20/20 hindsight is all good and well but nobody can predict how these things'll go until you trial it!

Emoticons aren't considered a reaction image since they're a part of the board and meant for use, but if they were used in a way that goes against the rules then it's warnable regardless.

QUOTE (Mrs. Aforcer @ Jul 28 2009, 04:49 AM)
In order to ensure an MFGG that more closely resembles the ideal that the mods and admins are aiming for, I think we should release a new set of rules entirely. I believe these points will suffice as a basic guide for this new set of rules:
  • All non-Moderator and Administrator accounts will be shifted to a new usergroup called "Not Staff Members"
  • Users in the "Not Staff Members" group have unlimited access to view the site (with the exception of Forum 12), but are not granted Posting, Editing, Private Messaging, or Quoting privileges
  • Users in the "Not Staff Members" group will have to wait 2 months before earning the Happy Heart badge (or perhaps some new equivalent of it)
  • The Happy Heart badge enables usage of the Avatar privilege; all members without Happy Heart badges will be given a default avatar until they receive this perk
  • "Not Staff Members" do not get Member Title or Signature privileges
  • Users not in the "Not Staff Members" group have access to all privileges and all forums, in addition to the ability to delete accounts and change avatars at will
With this new set of rules, I really do believe MFGG will be rid of trolling, flaming, and all other mean-spirited activities. It will truly become a peaceful, friendly community for new and old members alike.

I hope BS will seriously consider this new plan of action; it will be the best thing to have happened to MFGG in a long, long time.

That's not very ****ing funny. Don't try to cover up a troll by saying your serious either. "Non-Staff" my ass.

Couldn't say even if I wanted to, it's not ironed out yet so there's not enough details to bother saying other than "it'll help define the punishments necessary for lesser offenses like trolling much better while still keeping everyone in line" as well as keeping track of things better like repeat offenses.

Though I'm not asking you to tell me if I'm right or wrong, I'm pretty sure it'll be a warning level system where certain offenses get larger punishments (for example, if someone does something stupid, they might get banned from just the CCC as opposed to the whole board).

Yes, I see what you did there.
If we couldn't post, there'd be nothing to complain about, and we'd some people would be "happier".

...seriously, guys? Why all the complaining? Can someone please explain to me why being able to post troll ratings is so important to MFGG? It's not productive, and it's not necessary. I haven't seen anyone actually given solid reasons to why being able to post "10/10 I RAGED" to a post they don't like is so important. All I'm seeing is a small vocal minority of MFGGers complaining because of this small and ultimately inconsequential change.

The complaining obviously isn't related to people thinking this violates their "MFGG freedom of speech"; if it was, then I'm sure there would be people campaigning to remove the flaming rules and stupidity rule. But, surprise! There aren't any.

I get that MFGG as a whole is scared of change and whatnot, but is it really necessary to complain and complain on and on about every small change that the mod team decides to implement, even the positive ones? These new rules probably won't affect most people here anyway (and if they do, it's probably time to stop posting crying baby pictures).

The new rules make complete sense to me, and I'm wondering why they hadn't been implemented already.

I agree that the flaming rules should stick; those can actually be offensive.
Troll rating, on the other hand, are used COMPLETELY wrong here. They are supposed to identify a troll and rate how effective they were. Of course, the trolling on here isn't even true trolling, so everyone has to watch what they say for fear of being labeled "troll".

Irregardless, trolling is but harmless fun. IMHO most of the "trolling" here is well disguised flaming.

like I said in the troll rating thread
QUOTE
the troll rating is used to troll (essentially saying "your opinion/post/whatever is so stupid you must be trolling"- a troll post in itself) more than anything else. I don't really see it being used productively, ever. It won't be missed.

and that's really what it was used as when it was allowed here.

and since the ban the only time I've seen it used is to call out the staff

well except for that one thread where they were joking about it, don't know what the deal was with that ban

Wow, I'm wondering that, too! We were all waiting for YOUR approval, MrGuy, since you seem to be THE Decider in these matters.

I am "complaining" because this is something I care very much about. It isn't just about the troll ratings or the reaction images, it's about the right we have to use them if we wish. I was pissed off about that because I:

- knew it would definitely NOT stop at troll ratings (and I was right)

- knew that this was an injustice and would get good people banned (which it did)

I rarely post "troll ratings", so why should I care about it? Judging from my experience here, reading the posts of other MFGG members, the idea that "it doesn't affect me, I don't care" is very, very popular. When it comes to stuff like this, I care about other people, even if I don't agree with them or think they are assholes. These rules are too much.

Elly put it very nicely that the staff is trying to treat the symptoms and not the causes. If this garbage doesn't stop now, it will keep spreading until it encroaches on something YOU might enjoy. Will you care then? Of course you will. cool.gif

Clarifying the rules a red flag does not warrant.

why not

it should be pretty obvious that there is something wrong with the rule if members don't understand it

if you get right down to it the only members who were banned for any of this were a select few who were banned for reasons not mentioned or clarified in either of the threads.

sounds like the staff just hates some certain members

well I imagine even the staff weren't really clear on what's bad or what's good

I mean they'll never say "whoops we were wrong" but you can imagine that with this thread they're changing how they're doing things.
