big mistake graphic artists make: assuming that "darker = further away" is true for 100% of every instance (it's not)

Yes, that is weird!

But you said you didn't understand it and I don't get how it is difficult to understand such a simple concept as "he is attempting to make it appear further back"

He could add a few pixels of light to it, yes

Not always a mistake.

Making the viewer of a piece of art act as the light source makes it more immersive.

When you look at a work of art and all the light seems to be emanating from yourself, it makes you feel important.

Where sword goes wrong is with his inconsistency. The left leg is dark, but the left arm isn't.

Not to mention there's an optical illusion going on that's making the left arm look lower than the right arm, when it should actually look higher to show that it's slightly farther away.

Or if his body is turned (which would be an awkward idle position), then the neck positioning is slightly off.
