K since I'm the only /m/an on MFGG I'm gonna say it.
For well written mecha, watch the original Mobile Suit Gundam Movies and the Super Dimension Fortress Macross along with Do You Remember Love to SDF Macross, as they tie in. The animation of the first two WILL be subpar to what you are used to, but they are very well written and if you like 'realistic' giant robots those are the first ones. Come back to ME AND ME ONLY if you like them. If you liked Macross, then watch the rest of the series or Eureka Seven.
For the Super Robot genre, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a good starter since it actually references all of the older super robot shows. If you like that, watch Gainax's non-mind **** one, Gunbuster. If you like Gunbuster, watch its sequel Diebuster. If you liked the fanservice in those, then Godannar should be your next bet. If you didn't care for fanservice, then move on to the classics which will have worse animation that the first real robots I mentioned, Getter Robo and Mazinger Z are up. Again, come back to me at any time for further help.
For anime in general, watch Dragon Ball, then Dragon Ball Z if you don't care about slow pace/Kai if you want faster pace, remastered, but still being released. Then of course if you don't want moe blob, stay away from the extremely cutesy and non-MFGG popular stuff. There really isn't anything I can give at the moment as everyone already said the best Magical Gi-
Cutie Honey. Cutie Honey came before Sailor Moon and many say SM ripped off of it.
