wait, why are we losing our badges again? I didn't read through all the pages but people are saying "onos my UHH".

Is the badge system going? If so can't you just carry over the UHHs?

HH/SHH/UHH are the only badges that may not come over, due to starting everyone on a clean record. There's not technical limitation, it's a deliberate decision.

As far as I know some/most badges will be ported over or badges you've earned through things like sprite comps etc will be ported but others like happy hearts will need to be re-earned. Which isn't that big of a deal honestly, it's what comes with a clean slate.

Edit: Damn you RII

QUOTE (RetroXYZ @ Aug 8 2009, 09:30 PM)
I've never used MyBB, but SMF is just raw PHP with variables to apply to certain values ($message['member']['username'], $message['message']['post'], etc.)
And they're in functions which are called at certain times. SMF is also very secure (or at least, I've gotten positive remarks on it), and has updates often. I will admit that some options (such as setting groups to forum moderators) are missing, where phpBB has them (and on a place like MFGG, you would rather go with that).

To be honest, I liked that mostly because the HTML + pseudo-code in phpBB is odd and non-standard. But, if it all looks the same, then I guess I don't care what system is in place. In fact, I bet the staff will notice more of a difference than anyone else (the admin CP), since I know it operates differently than phpBB. Props to being able to replicate the IPB template, though.

Also, yay for name changes. I call ID #42

Being able to operate in the PHP environment can have unintended side-effects. Like I said, I can only speak for MyBB, which uses pure PHP for its templates, but I was able to print things out like the MySQL database username and password, so depending on what a particular skin function had available in its scope, very sensitive information could be exposed to the skin author.

Another shortcoming that MyBB has, and I don't know if SMF suffers from this, but it prints out chunks of templates as it processes them. That means information is printed out in a very rigid order, whereas with the pseudo-HTML template system, I could radically change the order of information. That's why it was possible to transform the subsilver template into an IPB-lookalike. If MyBB didn't already look like IPB, I would have been sunk.

All I'm hoping is that when we make the switch, we don't have that UGLY "phpBB3" default skin. I like the skins we have for these forums, and I'm hoping they'll be like this when we transition into the new system (ESPECIALLY the Board and Topic Listing Pages).

If you read the last couple pages, you'd see that we're going to have something that looks like this forum. phpBB3's prosilver template won't even be an available choice.

QUOTE (Retriever II @ Aug 8 2009, 06:49 PM)
Also, our decision to use phpBB was made over a month ago and we're staying firm to that decision. We've spent a lot of work now transforming it to meet our needs.

We came very close to using MyBB as our platform due to its similarity to IPB and rich feature set, but ultimately I feel MyBB's foundations are weak, and its security history is a testament to that (I also gave Techo a proof of concept that anyone with the ability to edit skins can use the PHP-templates to steal the database credentials).

Hey, I like MyBB! sad.gif It's the forum system that I chose to run the forums area for my site's fangame HQ! sad.gif

And I assume you're talking about the "edit skin/templates via the Admin CP", right? However, I'm happy that you didn't consider any other forum system besides phpBB and MyBB (that's why I'm still for transitioning into the phpBB3 forum system for this site) -- because from what I've seen -- competing free forum systems just don't cut it as compared to phpBB and MyBB.

As for the SMF forum system -- no offense, it's got potential too. But the forum layout on all angles (especially the Topic Listing/Message Listing)... BLECH!!! rolleyes.gif

...it looks exactly like IPB. Exactly.

Either way, you have full control over the template, so it doesn't matter how it looks, since you can change it.

But, it's going to be phpBB for MFGG, not changing, so whatever.

Before I read the remainder of this thread:

QUOTE (Guinea @ Aug 8 2009, 03:52 PM)
Just, what we do not like to see is people who come here and try to change the purpose of this board.
Mario Fangames Galaxy IS a fangaming board.
It WAS a fangaming board.
And hopefully it WILL forever be a fangaming board.
If you think that MFGG will change this original purpose, then you did not understand the concept of internet forums.
They are platforms where likeminded people meet, which in this case is everybody who likes fangames, Mario, Nintendo, other video games.

Long message short:
We're not elitist, you do not have to MAKE things. You can just LOOK at things (and possibly comment) and you are also not wrong if you do nothing and just chat with your buddies.
Just if you do not like any of the things this board is for, then do not try to disturb those who like to contribute. It's that simple.

THANK YOU.

I always rage at people trying to make this less of a Mario/fangaming board, and it does me good to see that an important member (and admin) whose opinion people actually care about is making a statement like this too.

I don't see anyone trying to "change the purpose" of the board

if people were trying to change the purpose they'd be marching into FGD and saying DON'T MAKE FANGAMES!!!! or some ****

do you see anyone doing this

I think everyone at least has an idea of what I'm talking about

like pushing relentlessly to make the theme of the forums less specifically Mario-related by adding random and miscellaneous skins (not just a couple/few select exceptions either), and periodically making threads to the effect of "let's just make this a Nintendo-themed forum instead of a Mario-themed one."

and then there's the general stupid attitude of "no one talks about Mario here anymore, so because that trend exists, the natural course is to continue it."

really the subversion is less fangame-related than Mario-related, I guess

each time I express my annoyance with those threads, moreover, I get various scornful people on my back for some reason. pretty tired of it, which is why it's a relief to see someone else who's more respected speaking out against it for once

Well personally i'd like to think the new board is adding a lot of small touches that keep it Mario / Nintendo themed. Nothing I could announce at the moment but you'll all see these things as we get closer to the changeover.

I think it would generally be a good idea to ignore those threads entirely because usually people making them do not contribute in any way and are not going to bring the active fangamers down so they're really not affecting anything.

EDIT: I don't see a problem with there being various skins, it still does not change the forum's general theme. I use the MGS skin and I can still tell this is obviously a mario fangaming forum

yeah but that's not a crusade against Mario or something

people just make skins because they like them; just because the members of a Mario forum like Mega Man doesn't mean it's no longer a Mario forum

and the reason you get flak for talking about it is that it's a petty, pointless non-issue that's nothing actual but another hole for drama to crank out of

Glad to hear booberry's being ported first. I couldn't live with neon blue.

So what else is the platform transition for, besides security?
