aside from obsolete boards, whose removal would be largely uncontroversial, I would strongly recommend that any other changes to the board layout be discussed with the members for critical consideration before being made. the change of forum software should be inconsequental in comparison. in fact, so people don't mistakenly associate a potentially unfavorable change in board layout with the switch to phpbb3 itself, I would suggest keeping the forum infrastructure the way it is right now, and then making changes well after people have transitioned to the new forum software (one change at a time yields best results).

what about stats, individual member stats, topics and individual topic stats?

my only request is that you give the Doomship, Codec Cyan, and Life at MFGG skins higher priority than others when you begin porting those. doubtful that this is going to happen.

any reason you chose phpBB3 over SMF or MyBB?

Will we be able to keep our badges if we provide a screencap of proof?

does this mean we are going to lose our badges on the new forum when we re-register?

because alot of us worked hard getting some of these badges, especially ones like the event badge and sprite compos

I know SMF has the ability to import the database from other forum softwares, including members, boards, posts, etc.
I'd imagine it might be possible to do for phpbb3, but I don't know if anything like that has already been implemented

They are porting badges over to the new forums.

This forum will remain an archive for a while so it should be no problem for you to get your badges.

The others will be ported over time.

SMF wasn't really considered.
We did look at MyBB, but when we found out that
1) The entire template system is a security hole
2) A terribad bug in a previous version allowed anyone to become admin via the birthday profile field in the UserCP (which was used against tSR)
3) Was slow
4) Had a coding style that was similar to IPB but without comments
5) Impossible to make skins for
it was generally considered that it would be no different than just sticking with IPB 1.3, except ten times more dangerous.

I think the only ones we'll be able to keep are ones pertaining to the main site and various events. We're using an upgraded badge system that better handles multiple badges (so you won't be capped at 5+ wins) and to successfully migrate those would mean having to dig through every single sprite competition and recalculate and... let's just say it would be easier to start anew on those. =/

well ipb1.3 is popular enough even today that I don't see why a converter wouldn't exist

however honestly I think it'd be best to start off new, the database here is probably huge and a converter would more than likely screw up a handful of things, I think it'd be less of a headache overall for everyone just to start over and archive this one.

This. The only way to import from IPB 1.3 to phpBB3 is to import from IPB 1.3 to phpBB2 then import from phpBB2 to phpBB3. This will cause a hell of a lot of data to be mangled, and things would probably bug out a lot.

Starting fresh is the best way to do things in a situation like this.
