Because good game developers (and any other type of good media producers) put some thought into the backstory and symbolism in a game. Portal is one game where it's OBVIOUS that there's a lot more going on than just your average AI-gone-bad situation with some girly stuff and metaphysics thrown in.

It's fun to try and figure out what's actually happening, and what's really driving GLaDOS to do the things she does.

This. Designers want you to know what they know and created so that you can get a more enhanced gaming experience, so they put in a couple of clues that people can find and think about.

Ahem.

Yeah, backstory and a fleshed-out setting are great, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about guessing and treating it as serious business. The only way I can stand such things is when it's tounge-in-cheek and not all that serious, like on the TVTropes WMG pages. I only take official or highly implied story. Fanon treated like it's true about the story is what annoys me.

Portal is a great game. It has a rather expansive backstory, fantastic gameplay, fun puzzles, a prime meme generator, and my favorite type of plot. What I'm saying is that I don't want any random theories shoved in...

Ehh, whatever. I can't really put what I'm trying to get at into words. I won't try anymore.
