Plot: 10/10 Engaging, multi-faceted, and dynamic -- I honestly can not think of a single dull moment in this movie. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the entire movie, and yet the ending seemed appropriate and well-placed. The story has no problem integrating you into the setting and circumstance of the movie, and the suspense is breath-taking.
Characters: 9.5/10 The main characters are well-developed and three-dimensional. Their feelings are believable and easy to relate to despite the sci-fi plot, and the movie had me feeling very deeply for them at many points. Also, despite the fact the movie had aliens, I didn't find myself feeling emotionally distanced from them like I do in a lot of sci-fi movies (i.e. AI, Signs, etc.); their characters are equally developed and their stories almost equally believable (at least, as believable as you can get for a completely fictional race). Instead of being the detached other-worldly beings they are in most movies, they were successfully illustrated as being part of our communities.
Effects/Cinematography: 9.5/10 The aliens were convincing in both design and rendering -- but their guns were even cooler in my opinion. The combat was convincing and visually engaging. The setting and camera angles all seemed suitable (though there were a few scenes shot from "the gun's perspective" that I felt were a little over-the-top). If I had to critique anything, it would be the number of times they used the people exploding gimmick. When you see people's insides splattered 4 or 5 times by alien weaponry, the visuals lose their shock value -- especially when you throw in the corny effect of their innards splattering all over the camera.
Overall: 9.75/10 Probably worthy of a 10, but I'm sure someone can find some flaw in it, so I gotta knock it down a little to safeguard the validity of my own opinion
