Why sacrifice simplicity just to achieve a little more control, when the majority of the time you're not going to need it? Sample VSTis treat the collected samples as one instrument; some of the better ones even feature the performance techniques I mentioned earlier. If I needed to mess about with a particular sample then they're always there for me to use and abuse as individual WAV files, but I would never make a batch trade-off between complete MIDI control and having to manually insert samples.

It's just not worth the extra effort for absolutely no extra control.

depends on the vsti i suppose

i've seen some sampler vsti's that are ridiculously limited

I can make a good song, but I am absolutely terrible at putting it into an audio studio program. :/ I need a MIDI keyboard.
