| QUOTE (fujiko @ Aug 25 2009, 12:47 AM) | This talk about instruments reminds me that I have a Casio keyboard.
But I am terrible at any instrument. I just can't get it to work, and when I do, Teacher comes over and says that I'm playing the lead with the wrong hand. |
Just give it some practice, you'll get it! I can play a keyboard if you give me enough time to mess around and pick out notes and such by ear, but I don't play it "right" either. I probably should get around to learning that... but not before I get around to finally practicing on the drums and getting my bass riffs more solid. Also, this is why I prefer the bass over the guitar (I've learned quite a few techniques from watching these videos and such): Victor Wooten doing an amazing soloPrimus - Tommy the Cat (driven by bass, also a crazy solo in there) Really, anything by Primus Also The solo within this song (solo is at 2:21) (Christian song, so don't listen if you don't like) The guy doesn't do that perfectly, but you should get the idea. I love the way it sounds. I'd post more, but holy crap just those 3 + "anything by Primus" will probably be enough to keep people busy forever if they actually listen to them.

| QUOTE (Glukom @ Aug 25 2009, 01:13 AM) | I think they were probably improv when they were first played, but they sound very much like they were planned out ahead of time.
Personally, I love the rhythm section in a typical rock band, especially when you have a really good, energetic drummer, and a bass player that plays things that would sound great as a standalone solo.
which is another of the many reasons why i love the Who |
Well yeah, for the recordings they probably were, but those are probably the parts where you'd hear something completely different when they went live. I see what you mean, though.
And don't forget that a strong rhythm guitarist is important, as long as they don't drown out the bass and the lead guitarist. It's fine if a band doesn't have one, but they really do add something. I never did understand all the hate that the rhythm guitarist got. :(

Glukom I now view you with incredible respect.
Seriously man, you sound like a dude who knows his Rock an' Roll. I respect that in a bro.
Personally though, I prefer Bon Jovi with The Who being a close second. Mainly because of Jon's singing and Tico's amazing talent to make things amazing just by doing little things, and other times he carries the song.
And good luck with that gig man, and I hope you're Uncle makes it through this.

rhythm guitar i find to be way more important than lead, at least a lot of the time
You got to get a good rhythm going before you start soloing like crazy.
and since i love going back to the who for things
Tommy, my favorite album at the moment, has no guitar solos. It has a few nice little fills in there, but no solos. It's all just straight up rhythm guitar - for the most part. In fact, you could almost call it rhythm guitar over rhythm guitar, since both the acoustic guitar and the electric are playing pretty much the same thing most of the time.
And you're right, those parts in My Generation were always different when they went live. Though, most of the time bands improvise in solo parts. Unless the solo sounds so good as it is, like on Boston's More Than a Feeling, then the guitarist will just play whatever the hell he wants to, sticking close to, but not exactly on, the path of the original solo.
Edit: Shroomguy, I can't really say I'm too big of a Bon Jovi fan, but he is a really good guitarist - hell, most of the guitarists in those big glam metal bands from the 80s were fantastic. I was just never a fan of the sound, personally. I dunno, that's just me.

I love the bass/rythm section because they really add something to your sound. Rhythm instruments really hold up whatever you're playing, without them the band sounds empty. I usually don't play bass (I play drums a fair amount, this is my 4th year playing) a lot, but I have great respect for bassests and drummers. They really add something to a band, without out them it just feels empty or somethin :/
However, there isnt a lot of them however, which is a problem I'm having. I'm starting a band with me on lead guitar and vocals, my bud on backup guitar, another friend on bass and some awesome bro on keyboard and trumpet. But it still sounds empty when we play **** without drummers, and I don't know a single drummer :<
P.S. This is my 6th year playing guitar. My favorite guitarist is Hendrix (lololol unoriginal) with Eddie Van Halen second.

Ha yeah, they were pretty over the top back then, but their more recent stuff is a lot different ("Joey" for example)
But I agree with you on the rythm part. I like a good, solid drum beat backed up with some old fashioned bass guitar. Rythm guitar can be good, but I prefer to keep it simple.
You know, I only play harmonica, but I'm studying audio engineering, so hopefully I learn more about what makes a good solid rythm. Most of my songs get praised for their precussion and bass, but as a whole they are called "Simple".

| QUOTE (Glukom @ Aug 25 2009, 01:30 AM) |
And I'm not saying I don't like a good solo here and there, but it's far less important compared to the rhythm guitar. Solos are just there to be flashy in many rock bands, which I never liked, but a good one that locks in perfectly with the rest of the song is fantastic. |
Yes, and I wish more people understood that. I'm tired of people wanting to show off their "mad skeelz" on guitar, rather than working with the band as one unit (except in the appropriate spots!). I'm even more upset that more bassists seem to be frustrated lead guitarists, nowadays, and they're too busy trying to solo all the time, rather than realizing that sometimes it's a good idea to stick with the tried and true chording.
@Mokun: Finding a drummer is so dang difficult. That's why I'm personally wanting to learn to play them better. I can give up singing if it means helping out a band that I'm in as a whole. It'd be a huge change from playing rhythm guitar while singing, or playing the bass (either with or without singing, either way is so much fun), but it'd be worth it.
