I believe it's a human right to have children, but I don't believe it's always "right" for some people to raise them.

Though I'm not 100% sure what you're asking by "get" children sooooo

It's human right to be able to, but I don't think some people think hard enough about what it'll mean. In some instances it can be extremely selfish to have children. I know of people who've had them simply to claim government cheques.

In Australia we have something called a Baby Bonus in which you get a certain amount of money for a new child, and as you'd expect, some people use this for the entirely wrong reasons.

Others do it simply because they selfishly want someone to love them, so they get knocked up and expect the child to give them love without anything in return. Unfortunately that only lasts so long and when the child grows up and basically becomes self aware and demands something more, then the parent goes and has another child. This is another pattern i've seen in people before.

So yeah, people have a right, so long as it's within reason.

I don't believe so, technically speaking.

And when I say technically speaking, I mean according to the UN Charter of Human Rights, which I believe is more or less the "universal" idea of what human rights are.

People have the right to marry, but I guess not to procreate, huh?

On a global perspective, I don't think it's a right for someone sterile to have a child. In nature, he or she would never have reproduced and that's just the way it would have been.

On a personal level, I do think people who can't have children but really want to, should be granted this wonderful gift.

In nature, probably 90% of people today wouldn't have children not because they're sterile, but because their too unfit and/or too stupid to survive what every other animal has to live through on a daily basis.

I assumed you meant this on a completely "personal" basis as you put it, since from a "natural" perspective, well...

It seems like a moot point, really.

Everyone should have the right to make children.
Everyone who then fails in raising their children (as in, abusing the children) should have them taken away.

I think that charter omitted anything that was really down to common sense.

Depends on what you consider "down to common sense," I suppose...?

Article 16.

    * (1) Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution.
    * (2) Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses.
    * (3) The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State.

It's a fundamental Human right that you should be allowed to "found a family" or to have children of your own.

Ah, fair enough.

It's been awhile since I've read through those -- thanks for finding that.

Disregard my previous post, then.

Parenting should be a privilege, not a right. When someone has a baby they can't handle, they put it into the orphanage. Also, with all the crap we give Mexicans about stealing our jobs, we should at least do our own part to keep the unemployment rate low. And the Amish have lots of kids that they try to support with the low resources that their society gives them. I just think that maybe if we had people take tests to get parenting licenses like getting a driver's license. This all roots back to religious morals; the Amish usually have children partially to please God. Also, many unwanted pregnancies can't get aborted because society goes against abortion, and I think at that point, you hurt more lives than you save, because the woman has either decided to destroy her dreams and raise the child poorly because she wasn't ready to parent the child, which affects the child negatively, or donate the child to an orphanage where it lives wondering who it's parents were.

I...sick as this may sound, do not see having children as a right but a privilege. Too many people have too many kids that they can not afford and too many people have kids that they do not nurture. Because of this you get a lot of **** ups. I also believe that we are past the point of overpopulation and measures should be taken to decrease the human population. I suggest adopting the 1 child rule.

But then again, these are ****ed up things for the government to do, but there are enough people out there who don't care, plan on having 8 million kids without a well paying job and just ignoring the **** out of their kids. Its something that needs to be done, even if it is something the government should not meddle it.

I think it's a right to have them, not keep them. If a parent is bad to their own flesh and blood they should be taken away to somewhere safe.

People who are unfit to raise children or have diseases/conditions that have the possibility of spreading to their children should not have children.

That said, it is a human right, but I think some people should use common sense before they get knocked up
