So today my Dad picked up a CD today of this album, Quadrophenia, and immediatly I was afraid that it may have been plagued by the whole loudness war bull****. So I opened up one of the songs in Audacity, and sure enough...

Here's what we get. It really sucks that we have no choice but to buy CDs like this, I mean, it can be loud and still have a little bit of range, but this is completely ridiculous.

most of the song will be comprised of the stratchy sound of clipping as opposed to the music

that has nothing to do with it

If the songs are mixed this way, then they lose all range, and all you get is a garbled mess of noise. Plus, if it gets too loud, it causes clipping and ruins the sound quality completely.

Buy it on vynl. Get a record player. They got it on tape? Tape sounds muuch vbetter than some of these fancy schmancy Compact Discs.

I actually did have it on vinyl, but it was scratched up really badly so I couldn't record it :[

disc 1, track 2. "The Real Me."

it's in the title bar in the screenshot he gave.

depending on whether you got a re-release or "remaster" or whatever, it might be different.

but "it sounds fine to me" has no value, it could very well just mean you're used to **** quality music that's been ruined in this way.

anyone who knows about audio can look at that screenshot and see massive clipping. there should be much more dynamic range, and it's not there. "turning it down" doesn't fix it.

It's not that they all sound horrible, it's just that they could sound so much better - or at least in this case. This isn't nearly as bad of an example of the loudness war as something like this is.

And the song was The Real Me, btw.

Edit: Though, I haven't heard a non-loudness war version of this song in particular yet, so I can't really measure how bad it is to compare. I'm gonna have to try my best to clean off the original record I have, which I'm sure will be a ton better.
