Here is the sound and music topic.


Some basics:
1) Accepted formats for MUSIC are: MP3, OGG, MOD, IT
2) Accepted formats for SOUND are: WAV
3) MIDI is NOT accepted!


Everyone who needs it can request the latest version of the engine in which you will find demo levels for which you can then make the music.
(I prefer you to request via IM if possible)

For sound effects, you don't need to make them yourself, as that is probably very hard to do. Instead, you can suggest good sounds and collect sounds that we can use.

What about voices. I'm still willing to do Mario and maybe Luigi and Waluigi if you want. Not sure what the results were with the auditions...

Anyway, I'm all set up to record at the moment, so let me know if you need some voices.

I write all my stuff in MIDI. I can convert them to .ogg files, possibly with sound fonts, but if you want upper-end quality I'll need to have someone convert them for me.

That cool? I know there are people here capable of doing what I require, but I didn't know if they were involved with the CFP at all.

midi's can be opened in Modplug Tracker (now OpenMPT) and saved as Modules. It should be able to save *.it or *.xm at your preference (bass.dll can play either.)

should convert ok but you might need to adjust the effects

supersound.dll, bgm.dll or jbfmod.dll, for example. A dll is required either way.

We're using BGM, which I have converted into a neat GM7 extension, which means only bass.dll is required separately because the bgm.dll is included in the exe.

Just for those who're interested how GM can play oggs and modules.

For the midi composers among you:
As long as you can convert your midis to one of the accepted formats, and they don't sound out of place, that's no problem. And if Draco is right, that shouldn't be too hard ^-^

The only real problem is editing the effects since they're not entirely consistent between *.MIDI and most Module formats.

Instruments can be imported into a Module off of the sound card, which will give more consistency and also allow the original *.MIDI effect to be retained.

As Modules are literally a kind of MIDI, they're made pretty much the same way; it's just the interface of the program that's different.




Also, I think I've got a basic idea for Grasslands, I just need to improvise a bit and I should have a good beta song for it.

I could also make a separate song for a forest level (since the grasslands tileset has lots of trees in it) if you like

It's the main theme of the game, something that, if need be, could easily be remixed to fit other situations like the final boss, or credits or any other important situation.

Think the theme the Brawl, or Endless Possibilities from Sonic Unleashed.


Those are the only examples I can think of.

Yeah, I think Sonic Unleashed is the best example. It was the main theme, it was remixed into a dramatic final boss theme, and you can hear parts of it during boss fights.

It was heard throughout the game, but in different ways.

Well, the meeting today will have a new demo, and even if you miss it, I'm sure Guinea could send it to you if you ask him. Not sure if thats the kind of inspiration you need though (seeing it in motion that is).

it's not just that i have to see the mood for the song but i have to wait til i get an idea that i actually like enough to dedicate to a project
