The top ones are too dark, and the bottom ones are too pale. You need to find something bright like the bottom ones, but make the skin a little more tan.

I have a new colours and shading things that combines the previous two. Does it look better?

Even though imageshack keeps changing my colours.

These are the best of all imo.

These are the ones that look most like MArio, and bring out the emotion well.

Even though SGG's (no offense) look a bit better, these suit the purpose emotions are meant for.

Thanks guys! Even though I didn't really plan on finishing for the competition, I might complete these at some point for fun.

I do like these. They remind me a lot of my Modern Mario sprites (which might also explain why you're having palette troubles, too...)

Anyway, my only real complaint at this point is that his 'stache seems a bit pointy, particularly on the basic smile pose. You might want to consider adding an extra pixel or two to round it out a bit. The basic design looks good, though.
