Finnish opera/gothic metal.

Lead singer is female, though, so it pretty much sucks by default in my opinion. Especially ever since Tarja left -- their new singer isn't really quite my cup of tea.

You probably would.

They're pretty easy to like, once you hear their music. In fact, I've noticed it's actually been the "transition band" (if you will) of a lot of people into various other genres of metal.

The topic's about Sonata Arctica's new single and soon-to-be-released album.

As for the songs, I honestly haven't really given much time to the lyrics yet -- still kinda lingering on the melodies which are very nice, I think. Though I'm sure what they're about is somewhat up to one's own interpretation of the music.

For the record, though, SA's music does tend to be more emotionally-themed and ballad-like, if that lends to your understanding of their music. Either that, or very power metal-esque.

Apparently asking how much metal she's actually heard means I'm bashing her opinion!

It's just that there's a lot of really bad metal out there, and I don't blame her for thinking it sucks if she's only skimmed the surface of the genre -- I honestly felt the same way for years. Once you delve into some of the really niche genres, though, it's easier to find things you might like. I think this is true with all music, which is why even I try not to bash genres as a whole.

I've met a lot of people that used to hate metal for years until they realized it's not all scream-o and angst.
