QUOTE (rtsmarty @ Sep 13 2009, 06:13 PM)
why is everyone so scared of socialism

Because we don't think it works, and it often times leads to communism as a result of politicians getting more power hungry because human nature naturally sways towards corruption with power.

That and for America, it's unconstitutional. That's the other beef we have with socialist ideas.

But I can't fully explain it right now, my head feels like it's being chizzled open. This is one of the worst headaches I've had in a long time.

But America is a Republic, and capitalism does work if the proper laws are enforced to keep corporate corruption down and the government doesn't mess things up by getting involved.

Ow my head dang it!

choices are good. (this isn't socialism:) It would be nice if there were public options for a lot of things. More options for the people mean more competition in the business world. With public options, the government also ends up setting a basic standard for competition, where competitors have to respond to "why should I go to you when I can just go to the government?"- which is what things like UPS and private schools answer. usually anyway.

though I'd rather just have it so we don't have 8000 different businesses doing essentially the same thing but hey im a communist im crazy

you can change the constitution (hello amendment system). It would be completely ridiculous to stick to some old idea that doesn't work just because the constitution says it. I mean look at slavery!

The deal with public options is that they don't need to make a profit, so they will naturally be cheaper.

People will flock to them because they're cheaper, and so unless the private companies can offer something the government can't (which they can't because the Government can pull strings to do most anything) they will likely go out of business because of cost issues.

Even though America had slavery for a while, it was still unconstitutional from the very beginning, it just wasn't applied to the black slaves until later on, which is something we gravely regret.

It can be ammended, yes, but none of the ammendments can tamper with the previous ones that hold priority, like the freedom of speech, religion, and the press.

Speaking of which, many politicians have been trying to get the Fairness Doctrine through for a while, which basically means that news stations will provide liberal and conservative views. This means that many conservative or liberal stations that have conservative radio shows will either have to compromise their beliefs and get a liberal or conservative in there, or shut down. This is infringement on freedom of the press.

they could if someone decided to pass one that did. No one would be willing to though, considering how important pretty much every American considers them.

while it might be cool to see some liberal media for once, regulating the news isn't something I'd want to see happen.

I don't think we should rely on governemt to do anything we can do ourselves in the private sector, and I don't think the taxpayer should pay for it. Anything the Government does is funded by the people, and I'd rather pay for my own stuff if I want it than have to be forced to pay for everyone else's.

1 - Yeah bot 18th didn't have as much of a priority as many of the other articles.

2 - I'm honestly not sure. I don't think I'm thinking straight right now, what with this headache.

Let's just go back to this being a joke thread alright?

why would the government make themselves better than the competition

the government has no reason to. it doesn't make a profit.

this paves the way for other companies to make themselves better. the government WON'T COMPETE. there's no reason for it to.
