Some of it is "creative" but:
- As Thingy said, quite a bit of it are noticeable edits. Additionally, you include this statement:
| QUOTE | | Use as you please, but give credit if you remember. |
So wait. If I randomly decide to use that Toad edit, I'm suppose to specifically credit you, despite the fact that all you truly did was take the original ripped sprite from someone else and changed it's color pallete? Especially when I could create the same basic thing without having to credit you?
If anything, you should be the one crediting some of the people who ripped the sprites/took the photos that you're using before you ask for credit yourself. v.v
- Tirgy the triangle? It's not really badmouth, but it seems a bit silly to defend a three color sprite that looks like something a beginner would make, no?
-
| QUOTE | | I'm working on being a better spriter. These are my earliest efforts |
In conjunction with the editing issue, I'd like to point out that creating edits won't exactly help you become a better spriter. If anything, it'd probably teach you to rely more on other's labor.
Anything that looked custom in that sheet, to be blunt, looked pretty terrible. For those people below the toad, there's quite a bit to pick apart.
- Why is the head side-viewed, and the body is front view? - The walking cycles on them seem pretty bad as well, considering it's two frames. It's fine to make 2-frame walks, however, the first frame appears to be the normal stand, while the 2nd only raises one side of the body. What, is their left halves paralyzed or something? - The hair is strange on the short blond guys. It seems to stick too far out. - Don't resize to show "flattened" people. It looks disgusting.
This is apparently two years of work, but to be honest, it seems more like two days, based on the vast majority of the sheet being ripped edited sprites, badly resized images, and poor custom sprites.

I think the thing is I've relied almost exclusively on the work of others, rarely taking the time to make my own sprites, even though I started my first game (too bad for MFGG) slightly over two years ago. The part about giving credit is a generic message I put on everything I make, from sprites to open-source games. I love Tirgy, but if I use him again, I'm going to make him look nicer. This was my first custom enemy creation. Oh, one more thing I did myself: An SM64 Bully/Chill Bully. This should've been there instead of the slightly-recolored Teddiursa.

That's basically what I just said.
| QUOTE | | The part about giving credit is a generic message I put on everything I make, from sprites to open-source games. |
When you ask for credit, it typically means that when the user makes something and they use something you make, you're basically telling them to put your name in their credits.
The © symbol is a bit of a different story, as it means that all of the stuff in that sheet was made by you. However, your stuff is mostly a just a bunch of edits made by other people's © stuff, so I'm not entirely sure if putting © would be appropriate.
| QUOTE | | Oh, one more thing I did myself: An SM64 Bully/Chill Bully. This should've been there instead of the slightly-recolored Teddiursa. |
That's an Ursaring. if I'm not mistaken. >.> Also, your bullies have the same issues as your Tirgy and custom people. Very little shading, unfluid animations (There's better ways to show someone is walking, than just raising the foot up a single pixel), unedited line art, etc.
I don't mean to be harsh, but you could definitely improve a bit.
Ways to improve:
- Use tutorials and learn the basics of spriting, such shading, contrast, avoiding pillowshading, good lineart, etc.
- Take a look at other people's sprites. You don't need to necessarily copy their style, but you could definitely learn how to make your sprites better. Additionally, if they're animated, you may want to take a look at some of those. On MFGG, you'll want to look at sprites made by people such as Dex, Shyguy Grey, etc.
- If you're trying to remake something, like Mario in your own style, use references. Sprite references aren't as good, as you'll most likely end up copying the style slightly. The actual 3d models or artwork are better to use, as it should have the correct proportions, and you'll have a bit more freedom.
Don't let others deter you, and continue learning to sprite.
