A fangame I'm making. There are paper mario style graphics, but not really any "paper" gameplay, yet. I've been working on this a while, and now I want to release an engine test for the public. Here are some features:
- Custom graphics, except for the mario sprite made by Oldskoolmario
-Enemy AI (Very simple)
- 2 enemies(one of which attacks the other)
Currently, you can't be hurt by enemies; they just go right through you. The two types of enemies are the goomba, and a custom enemy called the wild goomba. The wild goomba is the big orange one. If he gets close enough to a regular goomba, he will charge at it and kill it. You can only stun the wildgoomba by jumping on it, but you can kill the normal goombas.
There's a glitch where sometimes, after mario jumps, he is unable to move. I don't know why this is, but if you guys could help me fithis, that would be great.
I hope to add new features to an otherwise normal fangame, to make this one worth playing. For now, enjoy the demo. Screen 1 shows a wild goomba. Screen 2 shows the wild goomba attacking other goombas. Screen 3 shows the wild goomba stunned.

I'm surprised no one replied to this (possibly because this was believed to be made with RPG MAKER). Personally I'd say increase the resolution but most people are comfortable with 320x240 320x200 (etc). I can't say much about the engine right now. What you mentioned remains true and I don't know how you make your engines. Having no background is really discouraging.

I should've been more specific, sorry.
I use Gamemaker, and my collision code for solids is simply Move_to_contact in direction(direction) till at most 12, set vertical speed to zero.

The built-in collision functions are usually pretty glitchy, try using bbox functions to check if there is a collision, and fastloops to move out of collisions. If you don't know what those are, Google them.

The Mario looks like an overworld sprite, while the Goombas look like 2D platformer sprites.
