QUOTE (RetroXYZ @ Sep 24 2009, 06:23 PM)
The reason Windows viruses work is not because Microsoft fails at writing security fixes. They choose not to make them (except in system-critical cases) so that people are forced to buy anti-virus software if they want real protection.

I never said anything about Microsoft being bad at writing Security fixes.

I'm saying that the point is, open source doesn't mean that Microsoft is any less capable of creating fixes when they have the code themselves.

Anyways, back on topic.

QUOTE (MegaTailzChao @ Sep 24 2009, 07:34 PM)
Why is it that most people that use a Linux-based OS seem to have their heads so far up their asses they can't pull it back out?

We get it you know about computers now quiet down.

oh godddd this hnngh

don't get me wrong I have used Linux and although I do not use it on a regular basis all that much I find it is a pretty good alternative (I like the whole "multiple workspace" dealie and I find it generally uses a lot less processing power than windows does)

but yeah I am a little sick of it being preached. It's nice for people to put it out there because it certainly needs to be a little more known, but it is not absolute godsend

QUOTE (Glukom @ Sep 24 2009, 08:07 PM)
does linux have any benefits compared to using windows other than a different interface

it is usually a lot more friendly towards lower end computers and is nearly impenetrable in security

Ok so Linux is only better because it's less prone to viruses. It being free is irrelevant since Windows comes with practically every computer that isn't a Mac.

If that's the only reason then I don't really see what makes it so great. Sure viruses are bad, but if you aren't completely oblivious to how the internet works then you shouldn't get them on anything.

edit: didnt see nystres post but still i dont really see the big deal about it

It's open source, which means that anyone can make bug fixes, really. Don't like a specific feature? Fix it up!

Linux is hard to use. Well, it's not hard to navigate files and do simple ****, but as of now I mainly only do internet browsing on it. I still don't really know how to navigate the terminal well, I generally have trouble installing software from its source, I don't know where to find important files, or what files are important (aka I can't find the system32 equivalent, or know where the fonts are, etc), and I just plain don't know how to diagnose stuff when something bad happens, which usually results in having to google **** for about an hour only to find more **** that is illegible.

So yes, if you are extremely capable of using Linux, then bravo. You deserve to have your head up your ass because it's not easy... at least not for me.

unless you use that fancy windows emulator!

Game Maker versions before Version 8 and after 5 were so terribly programmed, WINE struggles to run them. It can only run them in Fullscreen mode, and even then, it's pretty bad. Also, WINE Is Not an Emulator.

It actually can run 90%(estimation based on how many programs I have gotten working successfully) of Windows Programs correctly. MMF2 Programs are supported, for the most part, and Source Engine Games work flawlessly, except you can't change Advanced Video Options. GoldSrc Games work, but are very laggy(for me), and Game Maker Games made with Versions 6 and 7 do not work that well, but some of them work slightly in fullscreen mode. I'd say that's pretty good support.

$ apt-cache search wine

wine-dev - Microsoft Windows Compatibility Layer (Development files)
winefish - LaTeX Editor based on Bluefish
