"i'll buy three cars and only ever drive one of them"

But then you'd always have the tank to shoot bad guys and you'd have the motorcycle to look cool.

I dunno what examples to use for cars but having all three just means you have the best of all worlds.

QUOTE (RetroXYZ @ Sep 24 2009, 08:23 PM)
The reason Windows viruses work is not because Microsoft fails at writing security fixes. They choose not to make them (except in system-critical cases) so that people are forced to buy anti-virus software if they want real protection.

hahahahahaha do you seriously think this?

also linux security isn't all that great. holes have gone unpatched for ages in many things because no one's paid or anything to keep them motivated to work on projects that they run.

the problem is windows users are usually in admin mode 100% of the time which is disastrous for most common users as they don't know their way around computers and lack the most common of sense and therefore do extremely stupid things that no one with any sort of knowledge would do and manage to still get viruses in this day and age. i have not seen a virus case in years and years from anyone i know except for my dad, who still uses faxes, outlook express, and IE.

are you serious

the reason windows seems so vulnerable is because it has a huge market share majority. people don't bother writing mac or linux viruses because the population that owns them is insignificant.

My opinion is that this topic instead of ending the linux hate just creates more, because you're trying to convert people who are happy with their Windows system into Linux users, and it has all been said.

It's almost like religion...

Also I doubt that people hate Linux. There is a difference between "not using" and "hating" something.

it's important

really i don't get it, you're not the one suffering; just because x person is using y whatever doesn't mean they havent heard about z or w. they have a reason for not using them; just because you don't like those reasons doesn't mean you should be getting worked up over it

Oh god. Not again.

When I think I finally see some light being shed in the whole Win vs Mac vs Nix ****, what I get is yet another ****ing ***** fight.

Look guys, let me say something. I'm gonna lay a case here, and I want you all to answer as unbiased as possibly.

User A is passionate about computers and programming. Sadly enough, he (yeah, let's say he's a he) hasn't received a good enough instruction in that kind of thing.

He'd like a good computer where he can practice, but he also has another problem: cash. He's paying for his (rather pale) tuition, is already in a college where he chose the almost completely wrong option (the right option exists, but was created just recently, and User A is barely graduated).

In short: He can only learn by himself, and he doesn't want to waste his available cash in something that won't help him, or else, be an obstacle.

He has found out about the free and open software options, and is intrigued.

However, when he asks about it, people either treat him as an illiterate n00b (or an idiot, which tends to be the second option in the insult list of computer nerds), or rather tell him to **** that noise, as it "sucks", and that he rather get the expensive, and clunky, "standard" alternative.

User A is confused, and also enraged, at this bleak panorama.

Oh, and I almost forgot: USER A DOESN'T ****ING CARE ABOUT COMPUTER GAMES AT ALL. IF HE CAN'T HAVE THEM, HE DOESN'T CARE. PERIOD.

I'm User A. What would you have to say?

I got HL2 Working, Episodes 1 works better than HL2, and the others I have yet to test. Are you sure you have the latest Development Version? 1.1.29 supports Source Games the best by far. You also need Proprietary Drivers for ATi, but I'm not too sure about NVidia.

You sir, have a serious problem if you think only money gives you motivation. People who are fat don't work out because they are paid, they do it so they can live longer. People working with computer projects don't work on their projects because they are paid, they do it because they want to. There are lots of complete fangames on MFGG that don't cost a dime! Besides, if you have actually looked at the Linux Website, you would see that they have a Donations system in place.
