Not sure about this, since Sonic CD did this all the time, and that's more or less the style I'm going for right now.

If this was like Sonic 2 style or something then I'd more likely change it

Maybe it's just the colors you're using are too harsh of a difference from the normal ground color, it just doesn't look believable.

Alright I see the problem, Sparks.

You see how in this screenshot the lighter/darker tiles are about half the size of a normal tile? That's what yours should be doing too.
