he looks stiff, there is no outer AA, he's pillow shaded and he isn't facing the same direction as ML sprites should.

Read tutorials for the most part.

It depends on the direction. I'm assuming this is in battle... or is this overworld?


But if you notice his head- it facing a totally different direction than his body.

He looks good, but make his face looking at the actual Bros. Like have two eyes on them instead of one and get a good red ML pallet for Axem Red. Oh and be sure to do overworld and he is too tall for my liking, Make him shorter, fix the color, and I'm sure people will love it man.

but yeah, you need to make him have less sharp edges to start
a little anti-alias does wonders to a sprite, and it's necessary with M&L style

after that i'd suggest you try again on the motion blur for his axe swing sprite
that brush size is just silly

It's far to big, he should be a little smaller han mario, but not by much, if not the same size as Mario. not only that, but the shading is way off, you need to really study some sprites in that style, don't even attempt animations yet, just focus on getting the style down. I'm not trying to be rude, but I'd have no idea what style you would be going for by looking at this, the only thing that gives away the style is Mario being there.

If you can get on the spriter's resource, I think Ridge has a tut on this style, and Star has one there aswell on overworld.
Also the line art is way to jagged.

sprites resource aint working for me... i'll take note to make it
1: shorter
2: face a more diagonal/donward with the face
3: shade him darker
Sidenote: after he's done, the next sprite i'll work on is my Breaker Beam (i made the blast pretty well in my oppinion)

Also, see how the mario sprite only has a black outline on the actual "outline" of the sprite? Try that (In other words, remove the outline from the "inside" of the sprite.) Also, try not to pillow shade and use the M&L palette

The shape of Axem Red looks a bit off.

Reference Image: http://www.mariowiki.com/Axem_Red

I'd suggest:

- Making the gray tube on his body a tiny bit skinner (one pixel in on both sides).
- Arms could probably be one pixel skinnier as well.
- Think of the head more like a half-circle that's slightly wider than the red base on his body.
- Feet should look a bit more triangular.
- It's not exactly a spike sticking out from the top of his head.


It's sorta nitpicking, but still, the shape of the character could be edited a bit to stay true to the original.

Keep working at it. I'd like to see this completed.

Did you try moving one of his legs a little bit upwards?

Also, it's a bad idea to hotlink from deviantart: if they find out they'll ban your account.
