The important of this is to know how well you heear a fangame. Accordingly, if you have speakers (that don't produce bass well) you'll need a subwoofer to hear audio to the fullest (except for game tracks with sub-sonic basslines, this will narrow things).

The only thin I can say about audio is to keep the bass/treble varied, and to never, ever use 100% panning (80% max). If you use 100%, it sounds too weird in headphones, unless it's sweeping.

I use a stereo speaker with subwoofer setup for fangames, seeing as there hasn't exactly been elaborate support for more audio setup with the current popular fangame creation tools.

4.1 Surround Sound. I have the two front Speakers, the Center, the Subwoofer, and the Rear-Left Speaker. >_> No idea what happened to the Rear-Right Speaker.

Most often cheap Game Boy earphones, or sometimes standard twin speakers. I used to use a better system with a subwoofer, but it would make horrible sounds soon after anyone touched it.
