Many stories based on animals from when people were more closely associated with them.

The problem is that

a. most of these animals are evil, you're not going to be getting intimate and snuggly with evil horror story spirits
b. these animal stories are primarily from early America (Indians) and China / Japan

Explain to me how people who were never exposed to these cultures, such as early 1900's Americans / British, became furry, especially when their culture and folklore were largely destroyed by the time Disney,etc. animation came about?

Personification of animals has happened in many cultures besides just native americans and asians. :|

Not to mention the large slave and black culture there after that spawned many, many tales of animals talking and in human like situations.

Well yeah I know it's not a porn site, but despite what you and I both know, it has unfortunately been labeled as such, so going to said site would make most people who don't know assume you'd be the creepy kind.
