What would be a good way to make an audio clip sound like it is being played outside of a room / at a distance?

Well, you could always just adjust the volume based on how far away you are, but that might be too simple for what you want.

The more reverb something has the further away it'll sound.

put a high or low pass filter on it

one of them will make it sound like it's playing out of a pair of headphones while the other will make it sound like it's muffled by a wall or a door

yeah, pretty much quieter and (a lot) more reverb

if you have winamp, this plugin has a "far away" preset that actually sounds damn accurate; you could probably use it to get an idea or maybe even feed the sounds through it while recording in audacity or something
