This is one of the 3 new mario fangames I'm working on which will be released alongside my other 2, Super Mario 666 and Super Mario IsoQuest. This is a simple tech demo of what I have in mind. The basis will be a mario game set in the NSMB enviroment with Sonic Style gameplay. It will have all of the powerups and stuff you'd expect from a mario game however it will be moving at a blistering speed. Thoughts and feedback would be appreciated, but keep in mind this isn't even an alpha or beta release it's a concept still on the drawing board.

Ok, so I've been thinking about this thing all day today... in order to pull this idea off I'm going to have to implement all things sonic and all this mario in a nice neat fast package. What I mean by that is this....I'm going to have to have all the power ups and stuff you'd expect from a mario game (this means mushrooms, fireflowers, stars and cape/raccoon tail, Mega Mushroom ...ect) PLUS I'm going to have to have zip pads and poles and loop de loops and all those nice things that keep Sonic moving so darned fast! This is going to be hard to pull off as the 2 styles of gameplay really aren't meant to be mixed however if I do this right the end result could be worth the trouble! I see a lot of people have checked the idea out but nobody has left any replies, I would really like some feedback AND TIPS for pulling this off. Anything would be helpful, plus I just want to know if anyone else thinks its a good idea. Oh I forgot to mention
F8 hides the menu and this game is joystick compatable just select it from the menu. Thanks for checking my engine out in advance!

The idea seems kinda odd. You want to combine Mario and Sonic elements, but imo, they don't really go together.

In a Sonic game, you're usually trying to complete the level as fast as possible.

In a Mario game, you're trying to complete a level using various power-ups, gimmicks, wall climbing, etc. to reach your goal.

In a sense, these concepts sorta contradict each other. If you're moving fast, you'll most likely be inclined to jump over any obstructions in your path. If you're using certain power-ups and stuff, depending on what it is, it's probably distracting you from using your speed.

And to be honest, your demo at the moment only looks like a game where Mario just runs really fast, has a short jump, and for some reason, can turn into Sonic. (lol) If anything, it doesn't really have ideas from either, aside from the incredibly fast speed.

yeah I see what you're saying and they DO contradict one another that's why I'm not sure how I want to execute this idea I'm thinking of maybe you're running really fast and lets say you have the fireflower and when you press the attack button everything halts to a slow motion effect d of like the matrix) as you take out a koopa or goomba and then after they go into their death animation you pick back up at lightning speed? Something like that maybe, I'm not sure... I'm gonna have to sacrafice some elements of sonic and some elements of mario I think to make it all come together nicely, that's the goal smooth fast nice mario/sonic gameplay. Also gotta get some better jumping in there Mario is the Jumpman you know

1) Use paragraphs. People have low attention spans and giant walls of text don't help that. :S

2) Slowing down the gameplay just for a fireball seems kinda silly. If anything, that'd make me not want to even touch my attack button. >.>

3) I can't necessarily help you. I'd agree the idea is nice, but you'd have to pick the right features from both games for it to work well.

Aaack! lost MMF 1.5 and the source file due to my hard drive crashing... Starting over with MMF 2 even though I don't like the new version I don't really have a choice but to use it. It's gonna take a while before I can put up a new demo

It's Clwe's Static Sonic engine and yes I did mindlessly swap the graphics out just to get a feel of what it would look like. Also I'll probably use this engine as the foundation and build off it by adding everything else like loops, corkscrews, barrel cannons (DKC) poles, and the works. that was the idea never claimed to be doing anything special here and thats what the engine was made for... making a game.
