The creator said he added it to intentionally gimp better players and make Brawl more of a party game. He didn't like people playing the game competitively (PPL PLAYING A FIGHTING GAEM TO WIN WAAAAT???) so he added a random element to the game that would hinder everyone and make the outcome a lot less predictable.

He basically wanted all players to be equal regardless of their skill or duration of playing (read as: Communism).

having items as special moves has a horrible idea
personally i preferred the original bros point system

I felt like there was an equal amount of gameplay between the brothers and Bowser.

A game can be competitive and also be played for fun, but a game that's been made as a party game and messed with so competitive players can no longer do what they do best, can only be played by people who play for fun -- not competitive gamers. It's like it was an intentional move by Nintendo to make sure they narrowed down their consumer-base, or at least shifted it over to people who don't wanna feel bad for sucking at a game.

Also I think it's kinda silly that I have to hack the game to enjoy it. I think I'll just enjoy my 360 where the games are good on there own and I don't have to put extra time and effort into them to make them playable.
