Also, people are playing competative poker, where you get random cards dealt, so yeah, I don't see how adding a random element to a game destroys the competativeness of it.

Sure if tripping ONLY happened to the good players or something, then it would be a bit unfair, but it happens to everyone.
Plus a good player doesn't run around aimlessly anyway and spends more time in the air than on the ground. I can't even remember the last time I tripped.

Poker analogy doesn't work since poker has always been random, so nothing was added to it. Tripping was never in smash bros and was apparently added to hinder the better players and equal the playing field.

I ****ing hate tourney***s but tripping still pisses me off.

It does work because my point was that randomness does not make a game uncompetative. And for that point the history of randomness in a particular game does not matter.
