When I launch the game, the "x game is launching" popup appears, loads a bit, then disappears, but no game ever shows

I don't get any error messages, and i've moved my addons so they won't interfere
as well, the -dxlevel 81 "fix" doesn't work

so any help?

edit: all source games and mods for games after episode one do not work

help would be appreciated

did you try reinstalling the games?
If that doesn't work, try entirely reinstalling steam-

That happened to me once, but only for L4D. What I did was I opened up the properties for the game, went to the local files tab, and verified the integrity of the game cache. And then it worked for me. Hope it works for you.

I'll try reinstalling steam; it didn't work to re-install gmod when that was the only problem, so yeah

@hippopolun: that's a good suggestion, because that usually fixes it, but i've tried it and it doesn't fix this. I'll let you guys know what happens

Okay, reinstalling steam did not work

On their site, they have an FAQ about specifically new source games not working (my problem), but the actual program you download to check if you can run them says I can, so I'm going to have to talk to steam support to fix this, most likely

thanks for the suggestions
