Um... because I believe you can choose who you want to play as without a code.

only players 2 thru 4 can, in single player mode you HAVE to be Mario...

Exactly what I'm thinking as well.

But what about Yellow Toad and Blue Toad?

true and we had had this disscussion before, you have to die eight times to play single player as Luigi. on top of that you must involk Super Guide...thus robbing you of whatever goodies you get for completing the game WITHOUT using it. this is why I'm upset

Did anyone officially confirm that Luigi is not playable in single player mode?

Because I have not seen such a confirmation yet.
And even if he's not selectable by default, chances are you can unlock him or put in some key combination like in NSMBDS.

Well i heard it somewhere, but I'm also adding emperical evidence observe:


here we see the pause screen for 1 player mode. Note Mario


now we add another player midgame. there is an arrow suggesting that the second player may scroll over to be yellow toad or blue toad


note: adding a third player has 2 arrows, suggesting that they can scroll left to be luigi instead or right to be blue toad.

all three of these suggest that the first player has no choice but to play as Mario, given player 1 has no arrows.

I'm not saying that this is 100% but it seems highly likely.

Thats to add a player, which has nothing to do when you are starting a game. When you start it may ask who you want to be, then let others select from the other 3.
