Give up. Shigeru Miyamoto himself said that Mario has no continuity. Plus the Koopalings were in Mario and Luigi, which was released few years ago.

Oh, and I think the clapping effect (after 1ups and such) is a very nice touch. I'm glad to see that hidden 1-up opportunities are once again available after so many years, rather than SM64's sparse but obvious 1ups and Galaxy's OH LOOK HARDNESS CHALLENGE LETS PUT A 1UP HERE SO THEYS DOSENT DIE ALOTSA TIMES. Some people like games hard enough to warrant a Game Over now and then.
