I need a recommendation for software that's free, and not general MIDI.

Also, if anyone could point me out to some decent freeware VSTs/SoundFonts, it would be appreciated.

Have you ever tried searching around at KVRaudio.com for freeware VSTs? It usually helps me out.

OpenMPT is good unless you want to do some incredible orchestral **** in which case you should just warez fruityloops

being a tracker OpenMPT works with Modules, which are MIDI-type but hold their own instruments (ie. ones you take out of a soundfont)

only serious limit: have fun making violins not sound like ****

LMMS is better than MPT IMO; I suppose I'll stick with that for now, then.

is there a tool that can edit midis? because I found a midi that I like, but one part ruins it.

Mixcraft has a pretty decent 14 day trial (which gives you another 2 days to use anytime you want after expiration)

Even after the 1st 14 days pass you can still use the program. you just cant mix it down to an mp3. (Save the extra 2 days until after you have a bunch of music saved up. Then use those days for the mixdowns) IT uses midi but is also capable audio recording

If you have $150 and want a REALLY good program (I doubt it, since your asking for a free one) then buy Pro Tools 8 (Im getting the $250 version soon)

LMMS is not to be compared with MPT. I can't find anywhere where it says it saves Module-format music, and this makes sense because it isn't a tracker.

You can't fairly compare a tracker to anything but another tracker...
