QUOTE (Comrade Kesha @ Oct 21 2009, 06:33 PM)
familiarity isn't the same thing as user friendliness.

Which is what I've been trying to explain. And, for the record, there should be a hyphen there.

Speaking of Linux, my Sister's Vista laptop had to go back to Dell for repairs, so I offered to lend her my laptop for the week. The catch, of course, is it had Fedora installed on it. Actually she's made it further than I expected although there's definitely been some rough spots.

Oh, and she will be happy to refute anyone's claim that Linux as a modern desktop OS runs fast on old hardware. It does not. Without tweaking, anyway.

depends on the desktop environment being used. XFCE is a perfect balance of usability and performance for, say, my mother's pentium 3

XFCE is also in my opinion not appropriate for a newbie left high and dry.

like I said, it depends on what you run. Just like running a newer version of windows on an older computer, you shouldn't run like KDE on an older one. What software you run should depend on your hardware's capabilities- you're an idiot if you think everything is going to work with an ancient PC

I'm still having an issue with your "thousands of viruses are written every day" line.

It still seems to imply that a thousand new viruses are written every day, and not simply that thousands are mutating, whether you've stated that it includes mutations or not.

You should restate it to: "New viruses are written on a daily basis, but upwards of hundreds, even thousands, can be mutated from already existing ones."

One of the reasons I think causes confusion about Linux is the wide variety of distros and companies that make them. People are complaining about how Windows has 6 versions or whatever, but Linux has 100s of distros made by different companies. Unlike Windows, Linux distros don't all have the same preinstalled desktop, software, drivers, etc.
