So I want to dualboot Vista and 7 on my laptop, so I'm attempting to create a new partition for Windows 7. As you see, my hard drive is 297 Gb and there's 152 Gb of space left.

So I go to the Disk Management console and try to create a new partition.

...And it tells me I can only free 212 Mb.

Why is that?

Fragmentation. Try defragging your hard drive and freespace with Defraggler.

Windows also can't move your page file or hibernate file, so you'll need to disable both of these, and then defrag. Have had this issue myself. Don't forget to re-enable page file afterward!

How do I disable those features?

You can't partition drive while it is being used.
First: BACK UP STUFF JUST IN CASE
Second: Insert the Windows disc.

It should have stuff on it for partitioning. I THINK.

Also...Why would you want Vista AND 7? Just use 7 lol.

he's trying to shrink it not partition it
plus you can partition a drive in use what are you talking about

as for op, you might want to try using a gparted livecd to shrink it
window's disk management is .. not really great

No, he is trying to partition it so that he can stuff W7 on one partition and Vista on another.
I generally try to avoid partitioning drives in use; higher chance that the partitioning will fail and everything vanishes.

GParted is indeed great. I advise it over using the disc as well; it is just extra work lol.

Ok, I found out how to disable pagefile/hibernate file. I did that. I defragged. Still gives me the same ****.

For reference, disabling the features doesn't always remove hibernate.sys and pagefile.sys from C:\ (you'll need to ask windows to let you see hidden, system and protected files from Folder Options). Its safe to delete these files after these fetaures have been disabled.

Sorry for late post, just replying for benefit of anyone else who searches later.
