Mostly because the ghost/demon/killer is never intimidating once you see it. That's where the genius is in movies that never show the monster. You never stop being scared. --------------------

That's a pretty broad thing to say. Silence of the Lambs and The Shining are two great horror movies. There are others, but those are the ones that sprang to mind.
