Not that any of you Linux-haters care. Hopefully this upgrade will repair at least MOST of the issues with Game Maker 6 & 7(Remember, the problems between 6 & 7 with Linux don't only include how WINE was programmed, they also include hardware and OS differences). I will report back to let you guys know when the upgrade is done.

Technically, you need something to use other applications in ALL OSes

It's just that most applications are made to satisfy the specs of the most used OS

Especially if the developers are douchebags who don't do cross-platforming

I fail to see how ubuntu 9.10 is going to make a difference... when it's the same wine being downloaded and compiled on every distribution.

I would agree with you that some developers are jerks for not doing cross-platforming, but sometimes it can cost dat cash-money that they don't have.

Eh, it depends. Quite a lot of the more popular languages have cross platform compilers that'll compile the code for a whole bunch of different operating systems as long as you don't use anything OS specific (even then, Mono has cross platform equivalents for most of the Windows specific stuff in .NET and C# as an examplesss).

It'll take time to create a cross platform version of something that has been coded specifically for one OS, but it won't really take much (if any) longer to code cross platform from the start.

The developers should, then, evaluate if the money they'd invest in cross-platforming would give them decent profit

And even then, sometimes it's just a matter of 30 minutes or so for the coders to write the cross-platform coding and ****, 30 minutes the coders most likely will spend idling or posting in gaming-oriented forums-

Linux

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I don't think it was very wise to include this line in that OP. :/

In the event of a possible (GNU/)Linux-vs-Windows war in this topic (which is more than likely to happen), this gets a lock of course, so stay civil.
