QUOTE
The Large Hadron Collider, the world's most powerful particle accelerator, just cannot catch a break. First, a coolant leak destroyed some of the magnets that guide the energy beam. Then LHC officials postponed the restart of the machine to add additional safety features. Now, a bird dropping a piece of bread on a section of the accelerator has, according to the Register, shut down the whole operation.

The bird dropped some bread on a section of outdoor machinery, eventually leading to significant over heating in parts of the accelerator. The LHC was not operational at the time of the incident, but the spike produced so much heat that had the beam been on, automatic failsafes would have shut down the machine.

This incident won't delay the reactivation of the facility later this month, but exposes yet another vulnerability of the what might be the most complex machine ever built. With freak accident after freak accident piling up over at CERN, the idea of time traveling particles returning from the future to prevent their own discovery is beginning to seem less and less far fetched.

That just sounds like bad design. Why wouldn't they cover up the part that got bread dropped on it?

Or at least put some kind of shield above it or something, because I know you can't just cover it up, or it'll overheat.

is the LHC seriously that sensitive to overheat from a piece of bread?

It's what happens when you make something so enormous out of so many moving parts that rely on critical temperatures.

tbh I can't wait for when they can actually fire it up for real.

I don't know about you but I don't design things thinking that birds are going to be dropping bread onto it and have a significant impact.

God damn. Birds everywhere must be giving each other fist taps for this.

First it was the bird that randomly took a **** in Cyndi Lauper's mouth while she was singing, and now a bird practically took down the LHC.

**** guns and tanks and ****, let's send blue jays and sparrows and chickadees to the front lines the next time we go to war.

They probably have some of it above ground to vent it out a bit. Hence why bread dropping on that part would be bad.

I don't understand why they wouldn't think to protect it.

It's like the Death Star; taken down by a bunch of snub fighters because they never thought something like that would happen.

Not that the LHC is designed to be an impregnable fortress capable of destroying planets.

... or is it?

now let's create a situation where the only thing that could possibly stop the LHC from working is for dinosaurs with jetpacks to appear

just to see what would happen

This sounds like something you'd read in Buttersafe.
