Well, I was sitting in class today, and I was trying to come up with a good Idea for a Mario game I could make... Many poplular ideas have been taken and used, perhaps even done to death. I have always wanted a Mario game where you can control any one of the 4 Bros either Mario or Wario. I'm not sure when it hit me, but I had an awesome idea. It kind of combines the aspects of many mario games. It would be a platforming game in the style of SMB3 or SMW, with multicharacter select like SMB2. So each of the 4 Bros would have their unique Abilities. Mario being standard, Luigi being his cool Jump, Wario with his charge, and Waluigi with something (I have a few ideas but if you have suggestions, make them).

I don't want to give away too much, but I will say the game will start with you playing as Mario, and as you progress you will meet up with the other Bros. Due to the nature of the story I am conjuring, Mario will be traveling all over the Mushroom Kingdom with a very specific purpose. The game will run much like that of SMB3 or SMW, as I said, in that it will have an overworld map. Mario will start out at the Princess' Castle and venture forth.

So some things I need suggestions for include what some areas and maps (for the overworld map) will look like. Their layout etc. I have been designing some various graphics and schemes for the icons I will use. But, I need some ideas on how the layout of the area surrounding Peach's castle looks. If you happen to know if this is pictured or displayed somewhere that would be cool, or if you have an idea you'd like to contribute, that would be good.

In terms of story and purpose and name, I don't want to be specific at this time. All I can say is it will feature 2 playable characters of people from MFGG, so if you can solve that riddle, then you'll know what I am on about.

So if you have any ideas for world layouts, or waluigi, or anything else to contribute, please do.

If you have any questions, you can ask those as well, but I might not be specific just yet.

So as it stands this idea/project is developing in my mind. It will use all the sprites I have been making, I imagine, as well as unique backgrounds and overworld sprites. I plan to code it using Java.

-Swamp Land
-Volcano Land

well, Due to the split locations of the characters, I would highly suggest some sort of way to move between mario's world and wario's world. Like, by a confiscated doomship or so. There would need to be some key reason.

I know that's probably out of the game's context, and so is this. Every time you select which brother you're going to be, all of the other three go to other locations on the world map (aka splitting up to cover more ground). If you need a brother to beat a specific level, you'd have to go to the level he's in, find him, and trade places with him. And, by randoim selectiob with certain factors such as if you've activated some invisible blocks and if their quality is what is needed to beat the level, they could actually beat levels and progress. Of course, this could be counterbalanced (in terms of getting a full exploration experience) with an abundance of keys - keys with an emblem on them which would also be above the locks you would see in a level, so you'd have to remember. One could even add that only one key could be carried by a brother at a time, or at least the brother who picks up the key is who carries it, so you'd have to find them and get it from them. This could add a strange metroid-like aspect of gameplay.

Then again, I doubt this is what you're looking for. But you asked me to look at it and so I did. biggrin.gif

Hey, cool, and I thought I was just ranting.

... Want me to rant some more?

Oh, and have wario's car in there somewhere. Definately. Like in a boss fight.

You should have some common bossfights and some regular ones... or, in a sense, sometimes bro's should team up to fight a boss (no idea if you'd have to leave the level, go find the brother and tell him to come with. Maybe a talking thing with the choices 'let's switch', 'gimme key', and 'help me out' would solve the problem). Like, say, to fight a high up boss, you need to play as either wario or luigi, teamed up with the other one, and either charge into luigi so he can jump high or be luigi and jump high after charged into. You could mix and batch several ways - fer instance, same two characters. Wario has to climb a ladder, avoiding enemy attacks (use lots of random events if this is a npc for collisions - always use random events if it's a realistic npc) and when he reaches the top, he lands on one side of a see-saw type aparatus which flings the high-jumping luigi high into the air.

Then you could either be wario and drive his car avoiding attacks or be mario and stand on the back of the car and attack the boss. soveryhappy.gif

I could make a SMW-ish wario car sprite if you take this in.

I always wanted to try an idea similar to this, except probably with either a Fur Fighters (picking up an item that changes the character to another one) or a Crash: Twinsanity (One character with the other following) sort of gameplay style.

Anyway, lots of luck on this game idea, Xander. I hope you can pull this off well.

I like the sound of multiple characters mixed with Metroidey Mario gameplay, and Waluigi definitely needs some love.

Here's my idea for Waluigi's unique ability: wall running and wall jumping, working a bit like the current gen Prince of Persias and Mario Sunshine, but in 2D. You hold B and run into a wall, then Waluigi starts running vertically. He can only run up a certain distance, after he reaches the highest point he starts sliding back down. Also when you fall while scraping against a vertical wall you start sliding down it. While vertical running or sliding, you can tap A to spring diagonally upward and away from the wall.

I thought this would be appropriate for Waluigi because of his long spindly legs, so his special ability should be to do with running and/or jumping.

Also, some Wario Ware-style minigames would be very appropriate for this. (or anything at all, I <3 Wario Ware)

There is kinda a direct corelation between Wario ware and the idea I have. Heh, that's kinda another clue.

I am trying to think how that Wall JUmping would help you play the game... I am trying to picture existing SMB3 or SMW levels where it could be useful... I can't really think of any...

Have any good examples?

(I am not sure about anything metroidy, I never really spoke of that, personally)

Nah, if you were to include wall jumping and have it an actually valuable thing, you'd need to be designing your levels with this in mind.

And here's a diagram showing how it could be advantageous...

That is actually quite good. I like. But if I were to keep with Mario DS, I might give that ability to Mario.

I thought about partner stuff, but it seemed a little too Sonic 2/ DKC.

I need to play more Mario DS, only 20 stars or something.

Perhaps you give Waluigi the ability to use special, really thin pipes. Or he could have swimming skills that are the equivalent of the frog suit.

Meh, just ideas. Perhaps the wall jump would be best. Maybe you could combine the thin pipe and wall jump so that Waluigi can access secret areas. He's meant to be a devious, sneaky character, so having the ability to snoop out secrets would be great for him.

I don't feel like reading those long posts so if someone already suggested this too bad:

Wario and Waluigi have to have a reason to help the Mario Bros. They aren't exactly evil but they aren't good either and they aren't too fond of the Mario Brothers.

Off the subject: By the way why does Wario even help them in SM64 DS!?I need to play that game. ;_;

He has a sort of **** Dastardly appearance, so that would really suit him. Maybe he could do stealthy things as his special ability, something like hiding in the background. Not sure how that would fit into traditional-style Mario worlds though.

That makes sense. I get the feeling that Wario on the other hand would take a more direct approach, telling the Marios "you pay me and I grab a load of treasure on the way, or I ain't going nowhere".

howabout waluigi can crouch down and perform a kind of "long jump" with his legs (like a frog does)

Sounds like a good idea.. somthing I once tried to do which wasnt fan game related.

Marios skill could be wall jumping

Luigis skills could be his floating jump so he can clear large gaps.

Warios would be breaking down cracked walls.

For Waluigi, how about making it so he does what the characters do in SMB2 and croach down and then he has like a rocket boost and shoots off into the air destroying any blocks.
