EDIT: LOL, I don't even think this is Waxy at all. Haha. ohmy.gif Waxy calls me Xan, most of the time, and I had just showed him that link, so I just assumed it was him. XD

Figured I'd dust off my account and post a few ideas.
-Call it "Super Mario Bros. 4" or "The Plumbers 4" or something like that.
-Switching characters can only be done at certain tag-up points, and not all characters would be available.
-Allow the two brother pairs to work in tandem a la M&L:SS. e.g. Mario and Luigi using Spin Jump to get over big gaps, or Wario and Waluigi teaming up to perform a Cyclone Bros. (Mario & Luigi get the non-combat abilities, Wario and Waluigi get the combat ones)
-Finally, arrange the abilities as such:
Mario: Normal Speed, Normal Jump, Normal Power
Luigi: Normal Speed, High Jump, Low Power (takes 2 jumps to kill most enemies)
Wario: Slow Speed, Normal Jump, High Power (can kill all minor baddies with one jump, even spiked ones)
Waluigi: Fast Speed, Low Jump, Normal Power

Hello, I know Xander quite well, he asked me for my input on this topic.

I have read all the other posts and I like several ideas, others I am not so fond of but I won't get into specific details because I really don't have time to do so.

Here are some of my ideas/opinions:

- There seemed to be little discussion of power-ups in this game. I believe that having powerups is essential.

- I do not like the idea of wall jumping, it is hard to implement and hard to design levels around. Other abilities could take the place of wall jumping. IE flying.

- In the realy stages of the game the four characters should be scattered in different areas. There would be a Mario-only area, a Luigi-only area etc. Once all of those areas are completed can you replay them with all chracters.

- I would like the game to be more along the lines of Super Mario World, I think it provides more freedom.

- Yoshi should not appear in the game as a sidekick, with 4 characters, it would be too much and too complicated to design levels.

- Mushrooms must be included.

- Each character will have a specific post-Muchroom power-up.

- Mario's power-up should be either the Cape, or Raccon suit.
- Luigi's power-up should be the Fire Flower.
- Wario's power-up should be some sort of strength gloves, that allow him to pick up items SMB2 style.
- Waluigi's power-up should be the Frog Suit.

Finally, I noticed people mentioned earlier that each character should have his own strengths and weaknesses. I agree. Here are some of my ideas for character strengths and weaknesses.

Mario:
- Well-balanced guy as per useual.
- Strength is Cape or Raccon suit ability
- Weakness would be that damage causes him to go from post-mushroom power up to small mario in one hit whereas for other characters would go from post-mushroom to small in 2 hits.

Luigi:
- He's a clumsy guy.
- Strength is fire flower and scuttle jump for far distances.
- Weaknesses are reduced traction when changing directions and landing from jumps and the inability to pick up koopa shells, he would simply kick them SMB style.

Wario:
- He's a big fat brute.
- Strength is abilility to pick up items (mentioned earlier) and to break down walls just like in Wario Land games.
- Weaknesses are limited jumping and swimming ability.

Waluigi:
- He's a lanky guy.
- Strength is Frog Suit and spring-jump ability from SMB2 so he can jump higher vertically than others.
- Weaknesses are slower running, plus relatively weak strengths by comparison.


Well those I my ideas, I guess I lied about going into detail.

I like some of the ideas about abilities.

But I have already planned most of the powerups.

I doubt I will have a leaf or a feather as an item, as that will ruin the multipath idea.

As the game comes more into focus, I will iron out the programming code for the abilities of each characters, right now I am just doing basic running and jumping. DOn't forget I am coding this from scrath, so things I code I want to be able to reuse, by modifying values, rather than coding all new features. Adding on to previous code is much more efficient, and can be just as good.

Aah, nice to see you here again Suigi.

Anyway, I always thought Waluigi would be a good jumper, since his legs seem rather springy... mind you, someone has to have a low jump I suppose, and it can't be Wario since he aleady has low speed.

Why not Wario? it can't Luigi, not even Mario, Wario is the best choice in my opinion.

Because each character except for Mario has a weak, a strong and an average skill. If you give Wario two weaknesses, it might seem unfair and unbalanced.

That wouldn't work.
Mario's the all-around good guy.
Even though Waluigi has the longest legs, do you honestly think they're that muscular?

THESE are the legs of a high jumper? I think not.
He's fast, but since it looks like Walu' hasn't worked out a day in his life (kinda like me), he can't jump that high while standing or running.
The crouch-down-and-jump thing that Player Guy suggested might work, in cases where Waluigi needs to jump.

what? hard to code, but level desigining around them is easy! I made 3 levels with wall jumping, fireballs, a star, and mushrooms in about an hour, and I'm a newb at tgf and mmf.

What would power be used for, exactly? Since most mario enemies die from one jump?
