One trickt aht is sometimes used is to have not just a blur trail but a trail of silhouettes of the sword at different positions of the swing. Basically, it's like actually drawing all the frames of a very complex and detailed sword animation, minus actually shading the sword corredtly and altering the body stance. ALSO! This is very important for fluid animations - always make sure that the first frame of your swing sprite is different then the following one. After that it isn't so important. By "different" I mean just shift a few pixels everywhere to indicate a very slight movement (try to do it everywhere though, so it's consistent) You gotta do that, especially with a sword this huge, because no one could swing that baby and not stagger a bit when trying to stop it.
Other then that... huge.
His nemisis should have like a super tiny dagger and still be able to kick his ass.
